General overview of Gholdengo
Gholdengo is an iconic Pokémon of the ninth generation, introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. It is the final evolution of Gimmighoul, obtained after collecting 999 coins scattered throughout the world of Paldea. This unique evolution system makes it a very special Pokémon to unlock for players. Its Japanese name is サーフゴー. Gholdengo stands out for its appearance made of gold coins and its central role in high-level strategic battles.
Type and battle profile
Gholdengo has a Steel and Ghost typing, which is extremely solid in battle. This dual type grants it many resistances and immunities, particularly against Normal, Fighting, and Poison-type attacks. In return, it remains vulnerable to Ground, Fire, Ghost, and Dark attacks. Thanks to its metallic body and supernatural nature, Gholdengo is particularly difficult to take down when used well.
Base stats and potential
Gholdengo's base stats make it a formidable special attacker. It has a very high Special Attack, decent Defense, and excellent Special Defense. Its Speed is average but sufficient to function effectively in many competitive formats. Its decent HP allows it to hold out for several turns, especially when supported by defensive moves or appropriate items.
High Special Attack to deal heavy damage
Good Special Defense to absorb opposing attacks
Balanced stats oriented toward strategic battle
Ability and coin mechanic
Gholdengo's signature ability is Good as Gold. This ability completely prevents status conditions inflicted by opposing moves, making it immune to ailments such as Poison, Paralysis, and Sleep. This ability is extremely powerful in competitive play, as it shuts down many strategies based on status control. The connection to Gimmighoul's coins remains central to its identity, even after evolution.
Key moves and attacks
Gholdengo has a wide selection of offensive and utility moves. Its signature attack, Make It Rain, deals heavy Steel-type damage while consuming coins, reinforcing its coin-based identity. It can also learn Shadow Ball to exploit its Ghost typing, along with other special attacks providing effective coverage against many opposing types.
Make It Rain for massive Steel-type damage
Shadow Ball for Ghost-type coverage
Support moves for battle pace control
Strategic use in battle
In battle, Gholdengo is often used as an offensive pivot or special finisher. Thanks to its ability, it can enter the field without fear of status moves, facilitating tactical switches. Timid or Modest natures are frequently chosen depending on whether Speed or raw power is prioritized. EVs are generally invested in Special Attack and Speed to optimize its impact.
Pokémon cards and collecting
Gholdengo has several highly sought-after Pokémon cards among collectors, including ex versions and rare cards from expansions linked to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Gholdengo ex cards highlight its offensive power and its connection to gold and coins. These cards are appreciated both for competitive play and for their aesthetic value and growing rarity.
