Forretress

The inside of its shell can only be seen when it engulfs its food, but it moves so fast that no one has ever managed to catch a glimpse.

General overview of Forretress

Forretress is a Bug and Steel-type Pokémon introduced in the Johto region. Its Japanese name is フォレトス. It is the direct evolution of Pineco, obtained automatically by leveling up, which makes it an easily accessible Pokémon over the course of an adventure. Forretress is particularly well known for its extremely resistant shell and its defensive role in strategic battles.

Thanks to its Steel type, Forretress benefits from excellent resistances against many opposing types. It is greatly appreciated by players looking for a Pokémon capable of absorbing damage while setting traps or supporting the team. Its solid HP combined with exceptional Defense allow it to hold its ground for a long time, even against powerful attackers.

Base stats and strategic potential

Forretress's base stats are clearly oriented toward Defense. Its physical Defense is among the highest of any non-legendary Pokémon, making it a formidable wall. Its Special Defense is more average, while its Speed is very low. Its Attack remains decent, but that is not its primary asset.

  • Solid HP for a defensive role

  • Extremely high Defense

  • Very low Speed, often acting last

  • Secondary offensive stats

In terms of EVs, players generally invest in HP and Defense in order to maximize its ability to absorb damage. IVs are also important for optimizing its durability, particularly in competitive play or raids. Forretress is often used as a support rather than a primary attacker.

Steel type and battle strengths

The Steel type grants Forretress many strengths. It resists a wide variety of types, which allows it to switch in easily. This combination with the Bug type reduces its offensive effectiveness, however, while reinforcing its role as a defensive pillar.

Forretress excels against physical attackers and can effectively wall Pokémon oriented toward raw damage. On the other hand, it remains highly susceptible to Fire-type attacks, which represent its main weakness. Players must therefore anticipate these threats and avoid direct confrontations against Fire-type specialists.

Most commonly used moves and sets

Forretress's moves are primarily oriented toward field control. It naturally learns several useful moves for disrupting the opponent and supporting its team. TMs also allow it to broaden its moveset.

  • Steel-type moves to benefit from STAB

  • Bug-type moves for secondary damage

  • Support moves for setting traps

  • Defensive options reinforcing its shell

In strategic play, Forretress is often used to wear down the opponent gradually rather than deal heavy immediate damage. Its low Speed requires good anticipation of turns.

Forretress in the Pokédex and cards

In the Pokédex, Forretress is described as a Pokémon capable of hardening its iron shell to the maximum before hurling itself at its enemies. Its compact size and spherical appearance reinforce its image as a living fortress.

In the Pokémon card game, Forretress regularly appears as a card focused on Defense and damage reduction. Certain cards highlight its Steel type and its ability to last several turns, which makes it interesting in control- or endurance-oriented decks.

Forretress remains a reliable choice for players looking for a robust, strategic, and durable Pokémon, whether in the main game, competitive formats, or for collecting.
