Detailed information

General overview of Mega Rayquaza

What sets this Mega form apart from others is that no meteorite or Mega Stone is required to trigger the transformation. Rayquaza simply needs to know the move Dragon Ascent. This rule is unique across the entire series and makes it a special case among all available Mega Evolutions.

Mega Rayquaza is a genderless Pokémon, so there is no male or female version. Its Shiny form features a black body with pinkish stripes, very different from the standard appearance with its green and orange hues.

Base stats

  • HP: 105

  • Attack: 180

  • Defense: 100

  • Special Attack: 180

  • Special Defense: 100

  • Speed: 115

These stats place Mega Rayquaza among the most powerful Pokémon ever introduced in the games. With 180 in both Attack and Special Attack, it can be used equally well in physical or special sets. EV distribution and nature choice allow you to orient your build toward Speed or raw power depending on your needs.

Type, ability and weaknesses

Main weaknesses

  • Ice - quadruple weakness

  • Rock

  • Dragon

  • Fairy

Its Delta Stream ability is a major asset in battle. It cancels all active weather effects and removes the weaknesses tied to the Flying type, which concretely reduces the number of types capable of dealing doubled damage to it. This radically changes how to counter it in tournament play.

Moves and strategic overview

Most commonly used moves

  • Dragon Ascent - signature move tied to Mega Evolution

  • Draco Meteor - high-power special option

  • Extreme Speed - priority move to eliminate a weakened opponent

  • Fire Blast - coverage against Steel and Ice types

  • Earthquake - versatile physical coverage

A classic set invests EVs in Attack and Speed with a Jolly or Naive nature. The combination of Dragon Ascent and Fire Blast covers a large number of opposing types. Perfect IVs are sought to maximize performance, particularly in Speed to strike first.

Mega Rayquaza in the Trading Card Game

Mega Rayquaza is available in several expansions of the Pokémon Trading Card Game, notably as very popular EX cards among collectors. These cards often require a high number of Energy to activate their attacks, but the damage dealt is proportional.

Certain versions allow you to calculate damage based on the number of Energy attached to Pokémon in play, making them strategically interesting in tournament play. Their artwork generally depicts Mega Rayquaza in full flight through the skies, faithful to its Pokédex entry in Legends: Z-A, where it is described as chasing a meteorite across the night sky.
