General overview of Mega Latios
Visually, Mega Latios is distinguished from Latios by several notable changes: two small horns point downward from its cheeks, its dorsal wings disappear to allow its arms to widen into shields on which new wings form, its red triangular ventral symbol turns white, and a long slender tail appears at the back of its body. In Pokémon Omega Ruby, it can also be used as a Poké Ride.
Type, ability and characteristics
Mega Latios retains Latios's dual Dragon and Psychic typing. This combination grants it good resistances but also implies weaknesses to watch out for in battle.
Type - Dragon and Psychic
Height - 2.3 m
Weight - 70 kg
Mega Evolution obtained with the Latiosite
Ability - Levitate: makes Mega Latios immune to all Ground-type moves
The Levitate ability is a major strategic asset. It completely negates Ground-type moves, which removes a potential weakness and forces the opponent to adapt their strategy. In competitive battle, this immunity combined with its high offensive stats makes Mega Latios a special attacker that is difficult to counter.
Moves and strategic overview
Mega Latios excels in the role of special attacker thanks to a very high Special Attack and Speed after Mega Evolution. It often strikes first and can chain significant damage before the opponent has a chance to react.
Draco Meteor - devastating Dragon move, Mega Latios's signature move
Dragon Pulse - more reliable Dragon move, ideal for maintaining Special Attack
Psychic - Psychic move exploiting the Pokémon's second type
Dragon Claw - physical Dragon move usable depending on your build
To counter it, Ghost, Dark, Fairy, Dragon and Ice types are your best options. Pokémon like Mega Gallade can prove effective thanks to their Fairy typing which resists Dragon moves.
Mega Latios in Pokémon GO
In Pokémon GO, Mega Latios appears in Mega Raids. Players accumulate Mega Energy by winning these raids to activate its Mega Evolution. Its max CP makes it one of the most powerful Dragon and Psychic attackers in the game.
Its best Fast and Charged moves exploit its Dragon and Psychic types. To defeat it in a raid, it is recommended to bring Pokémon with Dragon, Ghost, Dark, Fairy or Ice moves. Mega Rayquaza or other Mega Dragons are among the best offensive choices for these raids.
Mega Latios in the Pokémon Trading Card Game
In the Pokémon TCG, Mega Latios appears in the form of the Mega Latios EX card, found in the XY Roaring Skies expansion. This card is one of the sought-after pieces among collectors due to its artwork and its place in the XY series.
The Mega Latios EX card can deal significant damage but requires several Energy cards as well as a preparation turn before being played, like all Mega cards of that era. It naturally pairs with the Latios EX card in Dragon-focused decks.
For collectors, the Latios EX and Mega Latios EX cards from the XY Roaring Skies expansion remain strong references from the XY series, appreciated both for their visual appeal and their connection to this Hoenn legendary.
