Overview of Mega Ampharos
Introduced in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, Mega Ampharos is obtained through a specific stone called Ampharosite. Once the Mega Evolution is activated during battle, its base stats increase strongly, particularly in Special Attack and Special Defense. Its number in the National Pokédex remains identical to that of Ampharos, but its form changes radically with a long luminous mane that accentuates its Dragon appearance.
Type, stats, and strategic description
Ampharos's base Electric type becomes Electric and Dragon in its Mega form. This dual typing brings new weaknesses but also interesting resistances. The main weaknesses of Mega Ampharos concern Ground, Ice, Dragon, and Fairy types. In return, it resists Electric, Water, Fire, and Steel-type attacks multiple times.
Its base stats improve mainly in Special Attack, making it an excellent special attacker in raids or strategic battles. Its total HP remains decent with a base around 90 HP, but it should not be played as a pure defensive wall. Its Speed remains average, which often means optimizing EVs in Special Attack and HP, or even in Defense depending on the chosen set. High IVs are strongly recommended to maximize damage and overall power.
Its height and weight in kg increase slightly compared to classic Ampharos. This data can have an effect in certain games where weight influences specific moves.
Moves, TMs, and battle power
Mega Ampharos excels with Electric-type moves like Thunderbolt or Volt Switch. It can learn several strategic TMs, notably Ice Beam to cover its weaknesses against Ground or Dragon types. It also has powerful Dragon moves like Draco Meteor that reinforce its offensive pressure.
In battle, its Mold Breaker ability allows it to ignore certain opponent abilities, which is crucial against defensive Pokémon. A common set includes Thunderbolt, Draco Meteor, Power Gem, and a coverage move suited to the format played. Power Gem can surprise Fire or Ice type opponents and broaden options against different teams.
In competitive play, Mega Ampharos is often used as a special sweeper capable of dealing heavy damage in a short time. Its performance depends on the right timing of the Mega Evolution and the overall level of the team.
Mega Ampharos in cards and merchandise
In the Pokémon TCG, Mega Ampharos appears on several rare cards, notably as EX versions. Mega Ampharos EX cards display high HP and a very powerful attack requiring several Electric Energy. The price varies depending on condition, rarity, and set, especially for full art versions from XY blocks.
Collectors particularly appreciate editions featuring an intense light effect around its mane, reinforcing its Dragon aspect. Before adding a card to your cart, it is advisable to check the mint or near-mint condition, as well as the protection used to avoid any damage.
For players, Mega Ampharos remains an excellent Mega Evolution choice if you are looking for a Pokémon capable of combining Electric power and Dragon coverage, with solid strategic options thanks to good EV investment and optimized IVs.
