Overview of Deerling

Deerling is a Grass and Normal-type Pokémon introduced in the fifth generation. Its English name is Deerling and its Japanese name is シキジカ. It is particularly known for its seasonal form system, a unique mechanic that directly affects its appearance without changing its base stats. Deerling is a small Pokémon inspired by a fawn, and it holds an interesting place in the Pokédex thanks to its versatility and its evolving design.

In the Pokédex, Deerling has its own number specific to the Unova region. It is often encountered early in the adventure, making it an accessible Pokémon for players looking for a well-rounded Grass type from the very first levels.

Type, weaknesses, and resistances

Deerling has the dual Grass and Normal typing. This combination offers good flexibility but also several weaknesses to keep in mind during battles. It is vulnerable to Fire, Ice, Fighting, Bug, and Flying moves. The presence of the Grass type makes it susceptible to super-effective damage, especially from Pokémon using Ice or Bug moves.

In return, Deerling resists Water, Electric, and Grass moves. These resistances allow it to be useful in certain strategic battles, particularly in the early Gyms or against specific wild Pokémon.

Stats and battle potential

Deerling's base stats are balanced, without being exceptional. Its HP is decent for an early-game Pokémon, while its Speed is one of its strong points, often allowing it to move first. Its physical Attack is higher than its Special Attack, which naturally steers its moves toward a physically offensive style.

On the other hand, its Defense and Special Defense remain average, requiring the player to anticipate weaknesses and avoid prolonged confrontations. At level 50 or level 40, Deerling clearly shows its limits if it is not well supported by a balanced team.

Moves and level progression

Deerling learns a variety of moves as it levels up. It has Grass moves such as Seed Bomb or Vine Whip, as well as Normal-type moves that benefit from its dual typing. Certain charging moves allow it to deal decent damage while maintaining good mobility.

Depending on the level reached, particularly around level 20 or level 25, Deerling begins to access more powerful moves, which noticeably improves its effectiveness in battle. Its gradual move-learning makes it an interesting Pokémon to develop over time.

Seasonal forms and special features

One of Deerling's defining characteristics is its form change based on the seasons. There is a Spring Form, a Summer Form, an Autumn Form, and a Winter Form. These forms only change its appearance and coloring, with no direct impact on its stats or moves.

This seasonal system adds great appeal for card collectors and players wishing to complete their Pokédex with all available variants. Deerling cards showcasing its different forms are often sought after for their visual appeal.

Useful information for players and collectors

Deerling is available in several main series games as well as in Pokémon GO, where it retains its seasonal form system. Its catch rate is relatively accessible, making it easy to obtain. In raids, it sees little use, but it retains interest for completing collections and obtaining specific variants.

For card enthusiasts, Deerling appears in various sets, often at a moderate price. Its design, which changes with the seasons, makes it an appreciated Pokémon for building a visually diverse collection.
