General overview of Chien-Pao
Chien-Pao is a legendary Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. Known by its English name Chien-Pao and its Japanese name パオジアン, it belongs to the Treasures of Ruin group of Paldea. Chien-Pao is a dual Ice and Dark-type Pokémon, giving it a very distinctive offensive profile that is highly sought after in competitive battles.
Depicted as a majestic dog with icy fangs, Chien-Pao is associated with a cursed sword and the eight legendary stakes. Its design evokes an ancient weapon animated by a dark force, which is directly reflected in its stats and battle capabilities. It is classified as a genderless legendary Pokémon with no evolution.
Type and strategic weaknesses
Chien-Pao has the Ice type combined with the Dark type. This combination allows it to deal massive damage to many types commonly seen in competition, particularly Dragon, Psychic, and Flying. However, it remains vulnerable to several widely used offensive types.
Main weaknesses: Fighting, Rock, Steel, Fire, Fairy
Useful resistances: Ice, Dark
Immunities: none
In battle, Chien-Pao should be used aggressively, often brought in quickly to place immediate pressure on the opposing team.
Base stats and offensive potential
Chien-Pao stands out for its stats oriented toward Attack and Speed. Its very high Attack combined with an excellent base Speed allows it to strike first in the vast majority of situations. Its HP and Defense remain more modest, requiring precise management of its positioning.
Very high Attack ideal for competitive battles
Base Speed allowing it to outpace many meta Pokémon
Low HP and Defense requiring a fast offensive strategy
Thanks to this profile, Chien-Pao is often used as a physical sweeper capable of ending a battle in just a few turns.
Ability and battle impact
Chien-Pao's ability reduces the Defense of all other Pokémon on the field. This passive effect significantly boosts the damage dealt, not only by Chien-Pao itself but also by its allies. This ability makes it a feared Treasure of Ruin in the competitive formats of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.
This type of ability is especially effective in Double Battles, where the Defense drop affects multiple opponents at the same time.
Key moves and attacks
Chien-Pao has access to a wide range of powerful physical moves. It excels with Ice and Dark-type attacks, but can also cover other types depending on strategic needs.
High-damage Ice moves to eliminate Dragon-types
Dark moves effective against Psychic and Ghost types
Priority or boosting moves to secure quick KOs
Its movepool makes it a versatile choice, capable of adapting to multiple battle formats.
Catching Chien-Pao in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
To catch Chien-Pao, players must remove the eight sealed stakes scattered across the Paldea region. Once these conditions are met, Chien-Pao becomes accessible in its dedicated area. Its level is high, requiring a well-prepared team.
Catching Chien-Pao is guaranteed only once per save file, which reinforces its value both in-game and for Pokémon card collectors.
Interest for Pokémon cards and collecting
Chien-Pao is highly valued in the trading card universe thanks to its status as a legendary Pokémon and its symbolic power. Cards featuring Chien-Pao often display high offensive stats and a rarity sought by collectors.
Whether for competitive play, the Pokédex, or collecting, Chien-Pao remains an essential Pokémon of the ninth generation.
