General overview of Chi-Yu
Chi-Yu is a legendary Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet. Known as Chi-Yu in English and チオンジェン in Japanese, it belongs to the Treasures of Ruin group, linked to the legend of the 8 stakes. This Fire and Dark-type Pokémon stands out for its design inspired by a fish wreathed in dark flames and for its exceptional offensive power in battle.
Chi-Yu is classified as a Pokémon without evolution and cannot breed. It is available at a high level upon capture, making it a highly sought-after target for players wanting to quickly strengthen their team with a top-tier Pokémon.
Type, role, and base stats
Chi-Yu has a dual Fire and Dark typing. This combination provides excellent offensive coverage but also exposes it to several weaknesses, notably against Water, Rock, Ground, and Fighting attacks. In return, its stats are clearly oriented toward Special Attack, making it fearsome in battle.
Its HP is decent for an offensive legendary, while its Defense and Special Defense are more limited. This requires playing Chi-Yu aggressively, aiming to deal as much damage as possible before being placed under pressure.
Ability and battle impact
Chi-Yu's main ability is Beads of Ruin. This ability reduces the Special Defense of all other Pokémon on the field. In practice, this allows Chi-Yu and its allies to deal significantly more special damage, which is extremely powerful in both solo battles and strategic team compositions.
This ability transforms Chi-Yu into a true wall-breaker, capable of taking down defensive Pokémon that are normally difficult to overcome.
Attacks and offensive potential
Chi-Yu has a wide selection of effective Fire and Dark moves. Among its best options are Flamethrower, Dark Pulse, and Flame Charge, which maintain strong pressure while adjusting its Speed depending on the situation. Nasty Plot is also a key move, greatly boosting its Special Attack and making it even more dangerous.
Thanks to its powerful special attacks and its ability, Chi-Yu is capable of knocking out many Pokémon in very few turns. It is particularly effective in short battles and situations where momentum is crucial.
Catching Chi-Yu and location
To catch Chi-Yu, players must remove the 8 blue stakes scattered across the northern region of Paldea. Once these stakes are removed, Chi-Yu's shrine opens and allows players to face it. The battle is solo and requires a well-prepared team, as Chi-Yu hits hard from the start.
It is recommended to use Water or Ground attacks to exploit its weaknesses and to bring healing items to secure the catch.
Strategic use and EVs
Competitively, Chi-Yu is primarily played as a special attacker. EVs are generally invested in Special Attack and Speed to maximize its effectiveness. A nature boosting Special Attack is often preferred.
Chi-Yu excels both in battles against trainers and in offensive raids, provided it is protected by partners capable of handling its defensive weaknesses. Its presence on the field often forces the opponent to change strategy, such is the scale of its power.
