General overview of Castform
Castform is a very distinctive Pokémon introduced in the third generation. Its English name is Castform and its Japanese name is ポワルン. This Pokémon is entirely built around the concept of weather, making it unique in the Pokédex. Castform can change form and type depending on the weather conditions active during a battle.
In its normal form, Castform is Normal type. When the weather changes, it automatically adopts a new form linked to the climate. In rain, it becomes Water type. Under harsh sunlight, it switches to Fire type. When a hailstorm is active, Castform takes on an Ice form. This mechanic makes it a Pokémon that is heavily dependent on weather and its associated strategies.
How forms and weather work
Castform's form is directly tied to the weather conditions on the field. This change requires no action from the player and triggers instantly as soon as a specific weather condition is active. Each form alters the Pokémon's type but keeps the same base stats, which is an important point to understand for its use in battle.
Normal form with no particular weather, Normal type
Rainy form activated by Rain Dance, Water type
Sunny form activated by Sunny Day, Fire type
Snowy form activated by Hail, Ice type
This mechanic makes Castform interesting on a weather-oriented team, but also fragile if weather control is lost. Its Defense and HP remain modest, which limits its endurance against powerful attacks.
Stats and battle potential
Castform's stats are balanced but relatively weak compared to other specialized Pokémon. Its HP, Attack, and Defense rest on an average base, meaning it excels neither at raw power nor at resilience. Its appeal lies primarily in its ability to exploit the weather to adapt its type and attacks.
Thanks to Weather Ball, Castform can fully take advantage of the climate. This move changes type and power based on the active weather, allowing it to deal optimized damage in rain, sunshine, or hail. Blizzard also becomes formidable under snow, while Water moves gain effectiveness in rain.
Key moves and abilities
Castform has a moveset consistent with its weather concept. It naturally learns several moves tied to the weather and can access various TMs to enhance its versatility. Its level-up move list allows it to quickly exploit weather changes in battle.
Weather Ball as its signature weather-linked move
Blizzard in hail for maximum accuracy
Effective Water moves in rain
Fire moves boosted under harsh sunlight
However, Castform remains vulnerable to opposing weather changes. Poor anticipation can quickly reduce its effectiveness and expose its defensive weaknesses.
Capture, breeding, and useful information
Castform is generally obtained in the Hoenn region, often through events or specific weather-related characters. Its catch rate is decent, making it fairly easy to add to a team. It belongs to a specific breeding group, which limits some breeding options but does not prevent optimizing its nature.
In recent games and in Pokémon GO, Castform retains its role as a weather Pokémon with visible forms depending on the climate. Its maximum CP remains limited, but its appeal lies more in its concept than in the pursuit of pure performance. For players who enjoy weather-based strategies, Castform remains an original and technical choice.
