Detailed information

Overview of Calyrex

Calyrex is a Legendary Pokémon introduced in the eighth generation, specifically through the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games. Known by its English name Calyrex and its Japanese name バドレックス, this Pokémon plays a central role in the Crown Tundra expansions. Calyrex is a genderless Pokémon, with a slender appearance, but whose true power depends on the form it adopts with its steeds.

For players, Calyrex is best known for its two major merged forms: Shadow Rider Calyrex and Ice Rider Calyrex. These forms radically alter its type, its stats, and its strategic role both in the video games and in the Trading Card Game.

Forms and game mechanics

Base Calyrex is Psychic and Grass type. In this form, it remains relatively weak and little used in competitive battles. Its main interest lies in its ability to merge with specific Pokémon, which transforms it into an extremely powerful unit.

The Shadow Rider Calyrex form combines Psychic and Ghost types. This version is oriented toward Special Attack, with the ability to chain KOs thanks to its ability, which boosts its stats after each opponent it defeats. In the Pokémon TCG, this form is often sought out in its VMAX version for its offensive pressure.

The Ice Rider Calyrex form adopts Psychic and Ice types. It stands out through very high physical Attack and excellent endurance, making it formidable in more defensive or balanced strategies.

Stats and utility in battle

Calyrex Rider, in either variant, has very high base stats. HP is solid, often above standard, and Attack values reach peaks that make it a frequent choice on optimized teams. The Shadow Rider excels in strategies based on Speed and snowballing, while the Ice Rider is appreciated for its stability and raw strength.

In terms of vulnerabilities, the Psychic, Ghost, and Ice types imply well-known weaknesses, particularly against Dark and Ghost attacks. This compels players to build their teams carefully around Calyrex in order to cover those weak points.

Calyrex in the Pokémon TCG

In the Trading Card Game, Calyrex is particularly popular in its V and VMAX forms. Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX cards are widely featured in expansions such as Astral Radiance. They offer an excellent balance between offensive power and synergy with Psychic Energy cards.

Calyrex cards are sought after by both collectors and competitive players. Depending on the expansion and condition, stock can vary considerably, and certain alternative or Shiny versions can reach high values on the secondary market.

Appeal for collectors

Calyrex is a central Pokémon of the Sword and Shield generation, making it an important piece in any modern collection. Its unique design, its various forms, and its VMAX cards make it a very attractive Pokémon. Collectors particularly appreciate illustrations featuring the rider and its steed, with imagery marked by cold or shadow.

Whether for competitive play or completing a set, Calyrex remains a must-have Pokémon, both in the video games and in Pokémon cards.
