Detailed information

General overview of Bonsly

Bonsly is a Rock-type Pokémon introduced in the fourth generation. Its English name is Bonsly and its Japanese name is Usohachi. It is a small Pokémon that is often mistaken for a plant or a bonsai, but it belongs squarely to the Rock Pokémon family. Bonsly is primarily known as the baby form of Sudowoodo, making it an interesting choice for players who want to prepare a specific evolution.

Pokédex information

According to the Pokédex, Bonsly mimics the appearance of a tree to trick its enemies. Despite its plant-like appearance, its body is as hard as stone. It dislikes water, which is consistent with its Rock type. Its description often emphasizes its rigidity and serious behavior, which contrasts with its childlike appearance.

Type and strategic weaknesses

Bonsly has only the Rock type. This type gives it a good base physical Defense, but also several significant weaknesses. In battle, it is vulnerable to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel moves. In return, it resists Normal, Fire, Poison, and Flying moves well, which can be useful in the early game.

Base stats and EVs

Bonsly's base stats are clearly oriented toward Defense. Its HP remains modest, which limits its ability to endure over time. Its Attack is decent for a Pokémon at this stage, while its Defense is high for a small, unevolved Pokémon. Special Defense and Speed are, however, fairly low.

  • Modest HP but usable in the early game

  • Decent Attack to deal Rock-type damage

  • High Defense, ideal for absorbing physical hits

  • EVs often invested in Defense and HP

Notable moves and abilities

Bonsly has moves mainly centered around its Rock type. It can learn Rock Throw, Rock Slide, or Counter, an interesting move that exploits its high Defense to return damage taken. It can also access certain useful support moves depending on the version.

  • Rock Throw as a reliable Rock move

  • Rock Slide for more power in battle

  • Counter to surprise physical attackers

  • Mimic to reproduce certain opponent moves

Evolution and specific conditions

Bonsly evolves into Sudowoodo, but this evolution is not tied solely to level. To evolve, it must level up while knowing the move Mimic. This mechanic makes Bonsly strategically interesting, as it requires the player to plan its move set before evolving.

Value for players and collectors

In the main game, Bonsly is mainly used as an intermediate step before Sudowoodo. However, it can be played temporarily thanks to its good Defense. In Pokémon GO, it is sought after to complete the Pokédex. On the card side, Bonsly appears regularly in sets focused on baby Pokémon or Rock evolutionary families, making it a card appreciated by collectors.

Breeding and how to obtain it

Bonsly is generally obtained by breeding from Sudowoodo holding a specific item depending on the version. It belongs to an Egg Group compatible with several Rock Pokémon. Its light weight in kg and its deceptive appearance make it a unique Pokémon to add to a team or a collection.
