Detailed information

General overview of Blissey

Blissey is a Normal-type Pokémon, known in Japanese as ハピナス (Happinas). Its role is very clear to players: it is one of the best special walls across all generations, with an absolutely enormous HP stat and a natural ability to absorb special damage even at the highest level. In the Pokédex, Blissey represents the final evolution of Chansey, itself evolved from Happiny. This evolutionary line is built entirely around friendship, an important point to keep in mind for players looking to optimize their teams.

Blissey is almost always seen in defensive strategies. Its physical defense is very low, so it requires proper support, but its colossal HP allows it to hold its ground against almost every special attack in the game. In the main games and in strategic battles alike, its Recover move provides constant sustain and a lasting role in stall-oriented teams. Players also appreciate its access to a wide list of utility moves, including Light Screen, Toxic, and Heal Pulse, making it an ideal support unit.

Blissey's evolution

The evolutionary line follows this order:

  • Happiny – evolves into Chansey by holding an Oval Stone during the day.

  • Chansey – evolves into Blissey when it reaches a high level of friendship.

As with all Pokémon in the family, only females appear naturally, which makes breeding easier for players looking for an egg with a specific nature or IVs.

Stats and strategic role

Blissey's stats are focused on a single area: its HP, which reaches an exceptional total and surpasses almost every other Pokémon. Its Special Attack is decent, allowing for moves like Ice Beam or Flamethrower as coverage options, but its Speed and Defense are very low. In EV training, players almost always invest in Defense and HP to compensate for its main weakness. Blissey typically fills a defensive support role in stall or balance teams.

In a typical competitive set, you will often find:

  • Recover – to regain a large portion of its HP.

  • Toxic – to wear down opponents over time.

  • Dazzling Gleam or Ice Beam – for versatile special coverage.

  • Light Screen or Thunder Wave – depending on the desired role.

Useful move list

Blissey learns a wide variety of moves through TMs and by leveling up. The most commonly used ones are:

  • Recover – essential in competitive play.

  • Heal Pulse – a viable alternative for a support role in doubles.

  • Ice Beam – coverage against Dragon and Grass types.

  • Flamethrower – useful against Steel and Ice.

  • Toxic – perfect for a defensive playstyle.

  • Light Screen – reduces special damage taken by the team.

Weaknesses and typing of Blissey

As a Normal-type Pokémon, Blissey has only one primary weakness: the Fighting type, which is often lethal due to its very low Defense. Conversely, it is immune to the Ghost type, making it an excellent answer to certain special sweepers that rely on that attack type. In competitive play, it is recommended to pair it with a Steel or Psychic-type Pokémon to cover its weaknesses.

Use in the games and Pokémon GO

In the main games, Blissey has been considered a defensive cornerstone for several generations. Players also use it for its ability to provide Recover and constant support in long battles. In Pokémon GO, it stands out for its extremely high HP total, making it useful in certain contexts even if its damage output remains low. It is often placed in Gym defense thanks to its staying power and longevity.

Additional information

Blissey appears across many generations, with a stable number in the National Pokédex. It can be obtained by breeding from Chansey, or by directly catching a Chansey and raising its friendship. Its recommended nature is generally Calm or Bold depending on the team's playstyle. Its card prices vary on the collectors' market, but it is always among the most sought-after Pokémon for competitive teams.
