Detailed information

General overview of Alakazam

In the Pokémon universe, Alakazam is known in Japanese as フーディン and represents the final evolution of Abra after Kadabra. This Psychic-type Pokémon is one of the most formidable when a trainer seeks a creature specialized in Special Attack, Speed, and pure Psychic moves. For players, whether in the main games or for the collectible card, Alakazam remains an offensive cornerstone capable of defeating any enemy through its magical power and mastery of Confusion, Psybeam, or even Dazzling Gleam.

Characteristics and useful information for players

Alakazam has one of the highest Special Attack levels in the Pokédex for its generation, making it a direct threat in battle. It is lightweight, with just a few kilograms on the scale, and displays a rather slender but fragile frame with very low Defense. Players must therefore adapt their moveset to compensate for its low HP and limited ability to absorb damage. Its EVs should often be invested in Special Attack and Speed to fully exploit its potential.

It evolves from Kadabra only via trade, a mechanic that has left its mark on many players since the early Red and Blue versions. This magical evolution grants it a massive power boost and unlocks new Psychic moves like Confusion, Psybeam, and utility moves like Teleport or Reflect. Its Psychic specialization allows it to dominate entire routes when properly trained.

Type, moves, and recommended moves

Alakazam is a pure Psychic-type Pokémon. This type grants it great effectiveness against Fighting and Poison enemies, but a notable weakness to Dark, Ghost, and Bug types.

Recommended moves

  • Confusion – base Psychic move useful from the first levels.

  • Psybeam – high power and elevated critical hit rate to quickly eliminate an enemy.

  • Dazzling Gleam – excellent coverage against Dark types.

  • Shadow Ball – widely used to hit opposing Psychic Pokémon.

  • Kinesis – technical move to hinder the opponent.

Players can also round out its moveset via appropriate TMs depending on the generation. Its PP are not very high on the most powerful moves, so planning ahead during a long Gym run is important.

Strategic usage and team role

Thanks to its extreme Speed, Alakazam almost always acts first, allowing it to quickly knock out an enemy before it even attacks. Its role is clear: it is a glass cannon, an offensive Pokémon that hits hard but must not take hits. With its very high special base stats and bright Psychic moves, it easily controls a battle when placed at the right level.

Players must absolutely protect Alakazam with a solid defensive shield in the team — for example a Steel or Ground Pokémon — as a single well-placed hit can bring it down. In breeding, it often passes down useful Psychic moves to Abra or Kadabra.

Value in the Pokémon TCG

On cards, Alakazam often takes the form of powerful or rare versions, particularly in Ruby, Silver, or other generation sets. The artwork plays on its magical aura, its spoons, and its intense gaze. Some EX or VMAX cards (depending on the series) reach interesting prices, especially when in perfect condition. Collectors particularly appreciate the Shadow or dark versions.

Miscellaneous Pokédex information

The Pokédex description often mentions its immense brain, capable of solving complex equations in a second, using its tail or spoons to channel its psychic waves. Its power is such that it can bend light around itself, giving a strange impression during its appearance. For any trainer looking for a master strategist Pokémon, Alakazam remains a safe bet, generation after generation.
