Detailed information

The Fossil series was released during the Wizards era and is the third official expansion of the Pokémon trading card game in the West. This set introduces many Pokémon derived from prehistoric fossils as well as several rare creatures that became cult favourites.

This expansion includes:

  • Common cards

  • Uncommon cards

  • Rare holographic cards

  • Trainer cards

The design takes up the old-school style of the first editions with a simple layout and illustrations that have become iconic. The Fossil Pokémon cards are easily recognisable thanks to the Fossil symbol present on each card.

Iconic cards of Fossil

Some cards in the Fossil series are particularly sought after by collectors:

Dragonite

Dragonite is one of the stars of the set. Its holographic version is highly prized, especially in excellent condition. Its price can vary greatly depending on the condition and the presence of the Wizards logo.

Articuno and Moltres

Articuno and Moltres are among the most popular legendary birds in the set. Their holo versions remain must-haves in any Fossil Pokémon collection.

Kabutops

Kabutops perfectly represents the prehistoric theme of the expansion. Highly appreciated for its aggressive design, it is one of the most coveted cards.

Gengar and Haunter

Holo Gengar is undoubtedly one of the most iconic cards in the Fossil series. Haunter, its intermediate evolution, is also highly appreciated in non-holo version.

Hitmonlee and Muk

Hitmonlee and Muk round out the set's standout cards, particularly for players looking for strategies specific to the time.

Appeal for collectors

The cards in the Fossil series enjoy strong vintage appeal. The 1st Edition versions or those in near-mint condition often reach high prices on the secondary market.

The factors influencing the price:

  • Overall condition of the card

  • Presence of the 1st Edition stamp

  • Holographic version or not

  • Popularity of the Pokémon

Period sealed stock is becoming increasingly rare, which reinforces the value of the booster packs and sealed boxes of the Fossil set.

Appeal for players

Even though the competitive format has evolved, some Fossil Pokémon cards left their mark on the meta of the first tournaments. Gengar, Hypno or Ditto were regularly played in strategic decks.

The Fossil series remains a historic pillar of the game, often associated with the Base Set and Jungle. It is an essential step for anyone wishing to collect Pokémon in their original version and to understand the evolution of the Pokémon TCG.
